Brass Lion by Keithwormwood Brass Lion by Keithwormwood
Designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel himself, the Brass Lion was a marvel even in the impetus of the industrial revolution. Vaulting into true international fame when a single Brass Lion saved the charge of the light brigade in the Crimean war. Flanking, it smashed into the Tsarist artillery positions where it was eventually felled but not before bursting open and showering its attackers with boiling water and gouts of steam.

Key Features-
-Enlarged 6 shot revolver affixed to saber arm.
-Series of adjustable lenses which switch and telescope depending on the field of vision required.
-Fore wheel arms used as base when the robot settles into firing posture.
-The cannon wall is actually far thinner than conventional cannons, and is intended as a one-shot disposable weapon that splits open and is discarded after firing.
-Adaptation of a cavalry saber for cleaving foot soldiers from an elevated position.

It's beautiful, really. In a metallic, killing machine sort of way.

Excellent! My only problem is with the full lenght cannon. I doubt it can ever shoot without messing up itself with it.
But the whole design looks awesome regardless.

I remember this one from 50 Robots to draw and paint (currently sitting in my bookshelf). It was an inspiring book, especially compared with most other attempts at how-to-draw-robots books (I'm looking at you, "How to draw manga" series). Your level of detail is impressive, as always.

I always did wonder how it could fire the cannon without snapping in half, though. The waist is just so thin, not to mention the legs. And how does it avoid tipping over to the right?

I figured the cannon's extremely thin and shatters upon firing, throwing a bolt out the back to reduce recoil. The boiler on the back is offset somewhat for balance, and it kneels before firing. It's a pretty fanciful design though.

cool! i've been wanting to draw steampunk stuff for some time now, but approaching it has been a big problem, how do you start off the drawings?
I love the armour of it, makes it look like a mechanical knight, although the small lion paws seem a little TOO small to carry the thing, i guess it depends on how big your creation is.

I think it's really helpful on the very strictly structured mechanical things in steampunk art to still always ensure your initial gestures are very fluid and dynamic. Once you have a loose, successful sketch you can then work the structure into it before developing the art any further.

I'd like to see that thing try to move. I bet it would just hobble around and then roll across the ground with its wheels when in danger.

That is perhaps some of the best work I've seen, both the story and the art itself.

All of your pieces imply a more detailed background -- is there one, or do you just write the ideas as individual pieces?

In any case, :+fav:
