Giant by Keithwormwood Giant by Keithwormwood
Giants are a sad race. Hunted endlessly for the fearsome presence they impose, they are unable to congregate and form any semblance of community. Their huge statures create a demand for food that they can never meet. Constantly malnourished, they are forced to scavenge and raid small settlements and outlying farmsteads, which only acts to further daemonise them. While physiologically they have the capability to match humans in intelligence, they are invariably rendered feral and moronic by social isolation and a lack of sufficient nutrition. Giants are ostracised by their fellow Fey Folk for their bestial decline, and fearfully butchered by all others. Adorned in the pillaged accoutrements of a culture that glorifies those who slay his kind, this giant masks his face and binds his scarred and oft-besieged feet with the shields of felled soldiers. Stooped and bowed by gravity, the giant is a paradox of immensity and shrinking shame.

Materials used are blue colerase pencil, and Photoshop (majority of time spent drawing, hence "traditional" medium label).

Wow. Wasn't expecting to hear such a sad story to go with this character, although you can tell just from looking at him that he has a melancholy and decrepit nature.

Hi absolutely love this so much but I can't help but to feel bad for the cows. Poor guys :(

exactly what I would've wanted other people to realize when in the concept of adding "gigantic" characters.

"Their huge statures create a demand for food that they can never meet."

On occasion that can be explained away, By things like "It lives on a diet of gods and atmospheres."

Definitely one of the best (and most tragic/creepy) interpretations of the classical beast I've ever seen.

If ever I play a giant in D&D I am so making this part of it's backstory with full credit to your genius and homage to your awesomeness. And I'm so telling all my friends to come look at all your stuff.

I must say, that of all the pictures I've seen, this is the strangest, but it is unique.

Not ten minutes ago I was reading "Anatomy for Fantasy Artists", which features this illustration and several others of yours. It's a little surreal to see it here on DA. Everything that I've seen from you has such atmosphere and style. . It's simply wonderful.

Very interesting description, i think you concepted very realistic on how might any 'giant' creature be (malnourished, rendered feral and moronic, etc).

I LOVE the description - all too often you see giants portrayed as massively muscled and often obsese when, as you say, being that size it would be incredibly difficult to sustain itself!

i love the fact that you used things like a house and some cows to show how big he is. thats cool because usually the surrounding is in the background but you used them in the foreground to make his e.g. mask.

I remember seeing this when I was a child, it was one of my favourite books, the artwork and composition is amazing and it still makes me warm when I see it

could you perhaps give me the name of that book. I remember seeing this illustration somewhere as well, but can't exactly remember where...

I recognize this illustration! This is so exciting. I greatly enjoy your work, and I'm happy that I've found more of it to enjoy. :aww:
hahaha! i cant believe how many people post comments on your pictures along the lines of "i saw this in a book, nicely REDONE" as if to say i know this is a rip off. you'd think the first thing they would do is check the credits in the book, or at least google your name. anyway, i love your stuff man.

An excellent picture--the little details like the house-spire mask and arm-mounted cannon offer a vivid sense of scale even without a background. And I love the way the fantastic is casually integrated with realism, boosting the sense of verisimilitude.

umm, this might be a little weird but i made a sketch of your incredible giant, and I just wanted to say that...great work, with all your characters by the way. It's really great to see that you get the attention you deserve for all your hard work. Thanks for the inspiration, I'll try to actually make my own character next time
